SUMMARY:PART 2: Accelerating the Continuous Improvement of Existing Connec
ted Medical Devices Using Three User Thursdays and Product Analytics
DESCRIPTION:Oral Presentations\n\nPART 2: Accelerating the Continuous Impr
ovement of Existing Connected Medical Devices Using Three User Thursdays a
nd Product Analytics\n\nHorton, Moll\n\nTraditionally, once a medical devi
ce is launched and goes into broad use, it’s not possible to get det
ailed and timely data about the actual usage of that product by patients a
nd providers. But with the rapid rise of connected medical devices, Soft
ware as a Medical Device (SaMD) and digital therapeutics (DTx), this histo
ric constraint is eroding through the integration of product analytics too
ls and techniques into medical devices. \nProduct analytics is an integra
ted set of data about your users’ behaviors that allows you to analy
ze these behaviors both at the level of the individual user and in aggrega
te to gain insights about larger patterns and trends. While extensively us
ed in many other domains of interactive products, the use of product analy
tics in MedTech is still fairly nascent but holds tremendous promise to he
lp turbocharge an evolution towards the frequent release of medical device
s. \nIn the context of existing SaMD, DTx, and connected medical devices,
product analytics adds value in 3 different areas:\n●	Continuous enh
ancement through ongoing design and development\n●	Device operations
and end-user support\n●	Helping users better use their device and i
mprove their health outcomes\nAs with many areas of innovation and quality
improvement, the better the data that’s available to the product de
sign and development team, the more the team can accelerate the product de
velopment process resulting in a better product. Ultimately, product anal
ytics holds the promise of accelerating frequency of releases of product e
nhancements into both various phases of testing, as well into use by exist
ing medical devices in the field. While not a silver bullet, the types of
insights this technique provides can provide data that empowers medical d
evice product teams to steadily improve the quality and user experience of
medical device software.\nTo answer the next question that comes from man
y Human Factors and User Experience professionals working in MedTech&#8230
;. Yes, there are steps that can and must be taken to ensure that new risk
s of harm are not created when adding product analytics to the stew of med
ical device product tools and techniques.
