Joe manages the Human Factors Engineering team for Surgical Robotics at Medtronic. His team is responsible for identifying usability design inputs, task analysis and usability risk assessments, and evaluations for the new Hugo RAS surgical robotics platform. His team successfully completed a massive months long usability validation effort using over 100 clinical and non-clinical participants organized in surgical teams right in the heart of the COVID pandemic. He previously worked for Kimberly-Clark Healthcare (now Avanos and Halyard Health) where he founded the company’s Human Centered Design team, leading global industrial design and human factors. He has experience developing design language strategies, incorporation of human factors into design controls, and human factors instruction. Joe has lectured at several design and human factors conferences and is a member of the AAMI Human Factors Committee, as well as being a contributing author of the revised HE75 Human Factors Guidance and TIR-59 Integration of Human Factors in Design Controls. He has a Bachelors in Industrial Design from the Cleveland Institute of Art and has designed over 55 products that have been commercialized with 26 patents.
