PART 2: User-Centered Design Process toward the Development of a Standards-Based Medication Recommender

DescriptionWe executed an iterative user-centered design (UCD) process in the development of a clinical decision support (CDS) tool. The tool serves as a standards-based medication recommender for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. The tool is called the T2DM App.
To begin, a review of American Diabetes Association (ADA) guidelines informed the selection and prioritization of patient facts that would need to be pulled from the EHR into the T2DM App. This analytical work also informed the display of recommended medication based on the guidelines.
We will discuss the methods used to understand user needs, the context of use, and specific workflow associated with reviewing patient facts and ordering medications. In addition, we will describe the methods and learnings from iterative design and user feedback studies used to mature the display of patient facts, on- and off-guideline diabetes medications, ADA patient-specific recommendations, and the details on the order summary screen.
A final summative usability test evaluated the effectiveness, efficiency, and user satisfaction of the T2DM App in supporting prescriber’s adherence to the ADA evidence-based guidelines when ordering medications to manage Type 2 Diabetes. We will discuss the summative test methods and results.
